Gone are the days when a handshake and a promise were enough to secure a loan when times were tough. Gone are the days when you could go to any hospital uninsured and receive the same level of care as a fully insured patient. We live in a new era; one of risks, decisions, and consequences.

It is hard to even drive down a road in Colorado and not see mostly distracted drivers. Whether their eyes are on the breathtaking scenery or on their phones, it seems like the world has become invincible. One of the reasons I chose to purchase a large SUV two years ago was the alarming number of accidents from distracted drivers. I wanted the security that if one of those drivers struck us, my children and I would be safe. I worry every weekend when my mom is out riding on her motorcycle that one of these days I am going to get the phone call that my mom has been hit by a distracted driver and is injured.

Our biker community doesn’t get the security of automatically deployed airbags. We trade risk for reward every time we start our bikes. As we drive off from home, we take on the risks that one of these distracted drivers could hurt us. Why do we do it? Why do we trade the security for the wind in our hair? If we chose to live in fear of what might happen, how could we fully live?

Working with bikers, I am always amazed at how many have never been presented accident insurance. Automatically, when I ask if they have ever spoken to Aflac, the world’s top supplemental insurance carrier, their first response is yes, the duck, but I already have motorcycle insurance. Less than 10% of Americans own supplemental insurance, yet it is the very policy that pays you when you need it the most.

Think about how long it can take to receive money in a motorcycle accident even if you are not at fault. Will your mortgage company wait? How long can you not pay your electric bill before they turn it off? If you were hurt on Saturday and couldn’t return to work on Monday, how might that affect your family? The BikerDown Foundation has brought awareness to the biker community here in our backyard, but, even with fund raisers and persistence, their funds will never be enough to cover it all.

Tonight, on your way home, I want you to count the number of distracted drivers you see. Take a moment to really think about how your life could change if you were their next victim. Don’t stop living, but live prepared.
