The Last Ride: Billy Joel Shutters 20th Century Cycles and Bids Farewell to His Vintage Bike Legacy
By Laurie Paige Montoya

Billy Joel has always been more than the Piano Man. To the motorcycle community, he is a rider, restorer, and curator whose Oyster Bay shop, 20th Century Cycles, became a mecca for vintage enthusiasts. After 15 years, the shutters are coming down. Joel announced the shop will close in September 2025, with his collection of 75+ motorcycles heading to auction later this year, a decision tied to his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
A Love Letter on Two Wheels
Opened in 2010, the shop became a free public museum of Joel’s passion. Featuring Harleys, Triumphs, Ducatis, and more, it drew bikers and tourists alike. Oyster Bay honored Joel’s contribution in 2023 by renaming the block “Billy Joel Way.”
Why Now? Health and Legacy
Joel’s NPH diagnosis has made maintaining the shop difficult. While still active in music, he is stepping back from running a public venue. For Oyster Bay, it marks the end of a cultural landmark that brought foot traffic and moto-tourism to Main Street.
What is NPH?
Billy Joel publicly announced his diagnosis with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) in May 2025, specifically around May 23, when he cancelled his upcoming concert dates and began receiving treatment
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a brain condition caused by an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain’s ventricles (fluid-filled spaces).
Even though the fluid volume increases, spinal fluid pressure readings often appear “normal”—which is why it’s called normal pressure.
