Mile High Sisters of Colorado is a ladies’ motorcycle group in the Denver area. This group was developed because there seemingly were no other local groups that hosted rides. The other groups were more meeting and socializing at bars and talking about riding.
After receiving her motorcycle endorsement, the founder of Mile High Sisters also known as Road Queen just wanted to ride, ride, and ride! This is one badass lady. She chose riding her motorcycle over her husband, and this inevitably ended the marriage. This is something you would hear men doing, so hearing this blew my mind.
Before founding the group, she gathered six members from the other group that she was attending to support her, and they created Mile High Sisters of Colorado on MeetUp.com and went live on January 15, 2011. After nearly eight years, it grew from six members to over hundred and fifteen members.
Mile High Sisters of Colorado has monthly socials throughout the year, weekend road trips, workshops, and Halloween and Christmas events.
Sonia, a member of Mile High Sisters, states that she joined the group because she didn’t know anyone that rode and wanted to meet other ladies with the same passion. She attended her first monthly social and was hooked after meeting new friends in the group. Her favorite event this year was the weekend road trip to Glenwood Springs. There were about ten-Mile-High Sisters that went on the trip, and they all shared a vacation home near the downtown area. Several activities they enjoyed were Hanging Lake, Iron Mountain Hot Springs, and Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves.
What is great about this group is that all models of bikes are welcome. Sonia started off riding a Honda Shadow for four years and now rides a 2012 Harley Davidson Super Wide Glide for the last three years.
Sonia wanted to gain confidence riding the twisties, so she attended one of the Mile High Sisters workshops on how to ride the canyons taught by another member, Audrey. Sonia said, “I’m determined to overcome the fear of twisties and figure it out.”
There were two parts to the workshop; one was studying and discussing the workbook that touched on topics such as how to downshift before the turn and on how to counter steer. The final workshop was to go out on the road and execute what was taught in the workbook. Sonia passed with flying colors, but a few weeks later she had a setback while heading down Squaw Pass one weekend. She wasn’t focusing and went off the road, brushed against the canyon, and performed the splits while holding onto the handlebars and miraculously landed back on the bike and onto the road. “I wanted to hang up my keys,” Sonia declared, “but Audrey insisted that I don’t give up and that she will take me on a private lesson!” Audrey bragged, “Sonia now rides with confidence and was even up in the front with the fast riders in a group riding home from our South Dakota road trip; I was so proud of her that it brought tears to my eyes!”
Another sister, Stacey, rides an Indian Road Master; it’s a beast of a bike for such a small petite woman, but she rides that bike like she stole it. Before the Indian, Stacey was riding a Honda VTX1300 that she named Prince Charming until another motorcycle rider hit her from behind while on a group ride and totaled the Honda.
Stacey said, “I joined a group that I didn’t even know I needed! We all had the same goal…put miles on our bikes and become a better rider.” Stacey is one of the organizers and heads up the Halloween ride and Christmas party. She enjoys planning the holiday parties and had it at the Lone Tree Golf Club for the past four years. “It is a time to spend together,” Stacey remarks, “and talk about all the wonderful rides and socials that we had throughout the year.”
